What do you know about the reasons for emigration from Scotland?

My parents died suddenly when I was in my mid 20s after I finished Uni. I had contemporaries backpacking towards Australia at the time and they whetted my appetite for travel. With a family history of ex-pat soujourns ( I was born in Africa while parents were on UK govt service ) it didn’t seem unusual to make such plans and I left for Asia with a working holiday visa for Australia in my passport in 1983.

If you live overseas yourself, where do you live and can you say a few words about your personal Scottish diaspora story?

See above response. Parents imitially left for Africa in mid–1950s ( altogh returned in early 1960s in post-colonial ” winds of change”

Have any of your ancestors or members of your family emigrated? If so, where to? And do you know anything about their story overseas?

Older brother lived for many many years in different part of Africa after demob from Military service in late 60s.

What do you think is the legacy of the Scots abroad?

We are well known for contributing to other countries whether via Engineering ( father in Railways), infrastructure, education, civil administration and via taking of Scottish customs, humour, culture and our DNA to add to a rich mix in other melting pots!

Ending with something light-hearted: what did you think when first looking at the image called ‘Piper Kerr and Emperor penguin’?

Us Scots are everywhere! We are everywhere and have been for a long time. I am proud to be Scottish.

  1. Speaking of DNA … I find it quite incredible what modern technology has brought to genealogical research. Fascinating trace work taking place at the moment. Also interested to hear that you went to Australia in the way you did – I wonder how many Scots ended up migrating a little ‘by accident’ or at least by coincidence.
