Siouxsie Waller

What do you know about the reasons for emigration from Scotland?

Banishment. Covenanters and Jacobites unwilling to pledge allegiance. Most Scots settled in Eastern US, mainly in the South.

If you live overseas yourself, where do you live and can you say a few words about your personal Scottish diaspora story?

I live in NYC and work for the American-Scottish Foundation. My proven direct paternal line traces back to the Vikings as well as the Scottish Kings, William and Malcolm. My clan was originally Johnstone.

Have any of your ancestors or members of your family emigrated? If so, where to? And do you know anything about their story overseas?

What do you think is the legacy of the Scots abroad?

I hope we are doing a good job by having a National Scotland Week with lots of Tartan Week festivities in NYC. The kelpies will be here soon!

Ending with something light-hearted: what did you think when first looking at the image called ‘Piper Kerr and Emperor penguin’?

I laughed. I more wonder what the penguin would be thinking.

  1. It’s so great to have organisations such as the American-Scottish Foundation to keep alive the connections between Scotland and America, and also to serve the Scottish community. Such associations have existed since Scottish migrants made first foot-fall overseas, so it’s all the more brilliant to see that legacy live on!
